From farmer to fighter ace. Nguyen Van Bay had no formal education before he joined the North Vietnamese Military. He applied to become a pilot despite his age. Most instructors thought he was too old but he adapted quickly. Nguyen flew Russian MiG-17 jets against the U.S with outstanding success. The U.S. had more advanced planes like the F-4 Phantom and A-4 Skyhawk. But Nguyen shot down seven enemy craft and became an 'Ace'.
