Boilermakers have helped to power, build and transport the U.S. and Canada for over 100 years. As we look toward the future, the union is always seeking skilled and dedicated men and women to learn the Boilermaker craft through our apprenticeship training.

The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers grew out of the Industrial Revolution and the demand for steam power. Organized in 1880, we are one of the oldest unions in the United States. We are headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas (since 1893) and service more than 200 local lodges across North America.

Through subsequent mergers, the union today stands as the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, AFL-CIO. While it’s not recorded when Boilermakers began working in field construction, by the early 1900s, members were building the Los Angeles Aqueduct.

Ever since, Purdue's teams have been known as the Boilermakers, and the school's mascot is now the Boilermaker Special, a vehicle outfitted to look like the 19th century steam engines that Boilermakers built throughout the country. The National Transient Division of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was created in 1939 as Lodge 500. This occurred after significant confrontation between local lodge members and tankees employed by CBI which came to a head in St. Louis, MO.
