The U.K. Royal Navy recently monitored a surfaced Russian submarine as it sailed through the North Sea and English Channel, the service announced this week. Offshore patrol vessel HMS Mersey (P283) and a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) and a Merlin anti-submarine warfare helicopter from 824 NAS were dispatched to monitor Russian Navy submarine RFS Novorossiysk (B-61) and tug boat Yakov Grebelski as the ships sailed west through the waters.

Long distance swimming Aerin Bowers, who is originally from Saskatoon, swam more than 40 kilometres on June 30 to cross the English Channel in a single swim.

The English Channel is one of the most recognized waterways on the planet. Separating Southern England from northern France, this is the busiest shipping area in the world, with as many as 500 vessels a day plying the narrow seaway.

A healthcare worker will take part in a relay swim across the English Channel to support a charity that aims to prevent drowning deaths.
