Overnight, 3-6 inches of snow blanketed southeast Michigan making morning commutes to work Thursday treacherous and closing hundreds of schools and districts, including the Detroit Public Schools, the largest one in the state.

The National Weather Service issued an updated winter storm warning at 9:54 a.m. EST on Wednesday valid from 1 p.m. EST until Thursday 7 a.m. EST for Alpena, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac counties.

A winter storm brought snow to most of Michigan Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. Snow accumulations between 3-6 inches were expected in some portions of Southeast Michigan. Some areas around and south of I-94 may have seen a wintry mix that includes freezing rain or sleet, which led to a light glaze of ice accumulations.
