Washington, D.C.’s leaders pushed back against President Donald Trump after he expressed support for congressional efforts for a federal takeover of the nation's capital.

President Donald Trump is throwing his support behind congressional efforts for a federal takeover of the nation’s capital, saying he approves putting the District of Columbia back under direct federal control.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Thursday said she took seriously President Trump’s call for a federal takeover of the District, but she also felt it was an “unnecessary distraction” by the president to unnerve other elected officials.
